Abbo on Continental Star Victory

Abbo on Continental Star Victory

Hinckley AFC manager Carl Abbott said his side’s 6-1 victory over Continental Star in the JW Hunt Cup was an ‘ideal’ return to winning ways.

After a week long break, having not played on Saturday, Abbo’s men recorded a comfortable victory to end their run of three consecutive defeats.

And with a key run of league fixtures coming up, the former Wolves Casuals boss believes the cup victory sets them up nicely ahead of the return to Midland League Division One action on Saturday.

He said: ‘(It was) ideal really after a seven day break for the lads. We’ve given them the sessions off on Thursday and Saturday after the cup games last Saturday and on the Tuesday.

‘Numbers have slimmed down through our own decisions having moved a few players on, and then injuries and unavailability are biting hard at the minute.

‘The guys put a lot of work in last week, so they’ve had a seven day break. They’ve come back today and we’ve asked them to go hard in the game and work their socks off.

‘We weren’t firing on all cylinders quality wise, but it was a good work out for us to get back on the saddle.

‘We’ll train Thursday now, and look forward to the league games coming thick and fast now.’

Hinckley’s full backs yesterday were Lee Thomas and Marcus Jackson, two new additions who were both playing just their second games for the club. Abbo explained more about the duo.

‘They’re good additions for us. Marcus is very solid and secure whether he plays at full back, in central midfield or on the wing. I like him in at right back because he gives us some experience and some know-how in a young back line.

‘But then he will also give us some bite in midfield, so I think we’ll see him popping up in different areas.’

On Thomas, he said: ‘I’m really pleasantly surprised by how good he is with his defensive game. We know he’s good going forward, we know he’s got great attitude and is keen as mustard.

‘He’s enthusiastic, he’s young and we’re pleasantly surprised with what there is already to work with. We’re looking forward to working with him in the future.’
