A group of Hinckley AFC fans raised more than £850 in Simon Blyth’s memory through their charity bike ride to Heather on Saturday.
Six supporters, Marek Portland, Richard Shirley, Dave Jackson, Gary Scott, Paul Griffin and Jamie Harvey, all hopped on their bikes to ride from The Milestone in Hinckley to St John’s Park and back for Saturday’s Simon Blyth Memorial Trophy match, raising a total of £857 in Simon’s memory through their efforts.
They want £100 to go towards two player sponsorships in Simon’s name at Hinckley AFC this season, while the rest will go to Cancer Research UK. That includes £301 raised by Heather St John’s through their matchday raffle.
Marek said: “Simon’s passing has left a big hole in my life, as well as the lives of everyone who knew him.
“As soon as I saw the club would be naming our annual friendly against Heather in his memory, Richard Shirley and I had the idea of a doing a charity bike ride: from Hinckley to Heather and back.
“I want to thank everyone who made a contribution. It was done for a truly worthwhile cause and it was a really enjoyable day.”
It means that more than £2500 has now been raised in Simon’s memory since his passing in January, adding to £1966 collected through the wearing of pink shirts and a big raffle for World Cancer Day in February.
