League regulation changes: five subs and shirt numbers

Step six clubs can use up to five substitutes in a match as one of two regulation changes brought in for 2022/23.

In a move that mirrors a growing numbers of higher level competitions, clubs at our level can use five matchday substitutes this season.

A maximum of five can be named on the bench, but it means that all 16 players in a matchday squad can now play.

There are no restrictions on when the five substitutes can be used.

The other regulation change concerns player shirt numbers. Previously the starting eleven were numbered one to 11, and the substitutes from 12 to 17.

Now, any player in a matchday squad can wear a number between one and 20 and the starting 11 does not have to wear 1-11.

Both of these amendments were passed at the Midland League’s AGM and will be in force this coming campaign.
